Anthropology and Ethnology

The Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology has a scientific heritage of great importance.

The over 25,000 artifacts of the ethnographic collections are the most spectacular component: objects of all kinds produced by man in different eras - since prehistoric human civilizations (paleo-ethnological collections), and from all over the world (America, Africa, Asia, Oceania).

Our anthropological collections are also precious. There humans are the protagonists not through the products of their genius but directly: above all skeletal remains of Homo sapiens, in scientific dialogue with the remains of Primates (primatological collections), but also different specimens such as plaster models (plaster cast gallery), mummies and hair samples. In addition, the public can explore the curious fauna collection of vertebrate bones and the scientific instruments largely owned by Paolo Mantegazza, anthropologist and founder of the Museum.

The museum also houses unique photographic collections: anthropological portraits, different images taken during exploration trips and photographic studies of facial mimicry. This is flanked by the archive which preserves the correspondence of Paolo Mantegazza and the characters who succeeded him.

For the quantity and quality of the cultural heritage that it conserves and makes available to the public, the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology in Florence is one of the most important of its kind, the world over.
