Books and Documents

The book collection of the Botany Section holds around 2,500 volumes concerning botanical (monographs, Italian and foreign floras, phytogeographic atlases, nomenclature codices etc.) and museology studies (texts on the history and composition of collections, on museum education, exhibition catalogues, etc.). These volumes are included in the University Library System and can be consulted on-site.

There is also a collection of journals (93 titles), Italian and foreign, among the most important for research in botany, both by subscription and as a gift from institutions or associations. There is also a rich miscellany, more than 12,000 items, containing largely extracts of articles concerning the collections of the Section and, in particular, the results of the research carried out on the herbarium samples by various experts.

Along with the printed texts, there is also a historical archive containing manuscript documents, such as the Access Registers from 1842 to the present day, the old Inventory Registers of the botanical collections, as well as the original documents of botanists whose collections belong today to the Section.

To all this must be added the independent archive of the Pichi Sermolli collection, containing 450 books, some of them antique, in addition to the most modern texts relating to pteridophytes (a rich miscellany of 7,000 items) as well as an archive of correspondence held by the great botanist with specialists across the world.
