'La Specola' gets a makeover

Refurbishment works to commence in September

The redevelopment works of the 'La Specola' Museum will begin next September. The interventions concern the historical site of the zoological collections and anatomical waxworks in Via Romana 17.

The total duration is expected to be about 18 months. The intervention project on 'La Specola', the result of the collaboration between the Regione Toscana and the University of Florence, provides for an overall investment of approximately 5 million euros.

It will also allow a noteworthy exhibition upgrade: at the conclusion of the works 'La Specola' will be able to host the Mineralogy and Lithology collections, whose headquarters in via La Pira is currently closed to the public.

"We have worked in recent months to develop a complex and delicate intervention project, given the historical context in which we act - explains the president of the University Museum System Marco Benvenuti - initially with the aim of keeping certain areas of the museum open. Unfortunately, the final checks related of the site completed this week prevent us from making at least some visit itinerary available to the public, due to safety reasons."

'La Specola' then bids its temporary farewell to the public from 1 September, but some of the collections will be visible in other venues.

A collaboration agreement is being defined to this purpose between the University Museum System, the Opera Laurenziana and the San Lorenzo Parish for the organization of a cultural itinerary in the Salone Donatello, in the basement of the Basilica. The itinerary will focus on the origins of collecting from the Medici dynasty and its legacy until the establishment of the 'La Specola' Museum.
